Porch Swing Perspectives

My Favorite Sitting Meditation Place

Where I Sat During My Meditation

My front porch swing. Lucky me, I live in a fairly active residential neighborhood. My home sits several yards from the front walk on top of a sloped lawn. When weather permits I sit outside on our porch swing with my laptop or while talking with friends or family on my cellphone. But, other times I "unplug" and simply enjoy the quiet, watching and listening.

What My Bench Sitting Meditation Was Like

Because our home is up on a raised slope and there are shrubberies surrounding the house I am able to sit outside on the front porch with a fair amount of privacy. However I am seated too far from people walking by to actually hear their conversation or to be able to see their facial expressions. But, I can listen to the wind chimes hanging overhead, the birds singing, bees buzzing, hummingbirds darting about, and children's chatterings and laughter while walking home from school. I also watch joggers, kids on skateboards, and parents pushing strollers past the house. Oh, and the occasional motorcycle puttering down the road certainly makes itself noticed. A neighbor operates a daycare center in her home and nearly everyday she trots the children past our home. So sweet, watching the little kids holding hands in pairs as they walk along the sidewalk, similar to little ducklings following their mama.

Lessons Learned

  • It is important to routinely unplug from our techno-toys.
  • Who knew people watching could be meditative?
