Question: How can I help our sad and lonely dog?
My son has gone to college, this is his first year. He is not close enough to come home on weekends. He has left behind his Black Lab named Buddy. Buddy is very unhappy and seems to be losing weight. I am concerned that this behavior will eventually lead to a very sick dog. What can I do to raise the dog's spirits and give him his energy back?

As far as Buddy knows, your son has gone away and will never return. He is in mourning, and you will need to help him through his grief. He can't understand that your son will return sometime, nor will he understand when he again disappears. You can spend more time with Buddy, give him more attention, and in general substitute for whatever activities your son may have done with him. Eventually he will get over this, but for now he is depressed and needs love and reassurance.
