Asking for money can be tricky for some of us. I recently increased the fees that I charge for my healing sessions AND truthfully, the increase was long overdue. I've had no complaints from my regulars and even picked up a couple of new clients.
In the past I have struggled whenever determining what fees to charge for my services. To be truthful, I will probably always have money issues to deal with on some level. Our personal issues are always multi-layered. But... I've peeled away many layers. I see improvement!
As an independent contractor I am most comfortable charging by the project rather than by the hour. Mainly because whenever I have set hourly fees I discovered that I tend to berate myself for not getting things done faster. In order to compensate for my "self-judgment" of being too pokey I would only charge the client one hour for every hour and fifteen minutes (or more) of my actual labor. So basically, the client would be getting a really good deal (and not even know it!). Silly! This whole scenario set me up to not only feeling inadequate BUT also feeling underpaid and unappreciated.
Sometimes I cannot get around charging by the hour because it can be difficult under some instances to estimate how long a particular project may take me to finish -- especially when the client's needs are likely to change midway into a project.
It is interesting to learn how "money issues" can affect our emotions. Sometimes the lesson is more valuable than the money actually earned. But - just remember, everyone needs to eat! Including yourself.
Jenn Givler, the Catalyst for Thriving Holistic Businesses, offers advice regarding putting a price tag on your healing products and services. She warns not to let feelings of guilt or fear make you undercharge. Setting fair fees is important. A reasonable price for the client to pay of course, but there also needs to be a fair exchange for the healer. Your time, effort, expertise, and overhead costs should all be considered. Jenn also suggests "Intuitive Pricing" as a way to realizing the worth of your services.

Thanks for this article. I maintain a site and blog on healing pain naturally since that is what I did to myself and I always feel guilty when I put a price-tag on something. Part of me feels that I want to GIVE my ebook and all the info I have learned away but at the same time I have have friends that were ill say my book changed their life — so how do you put a price on that and besides I need money to live! This article brought up some great issues — thanks for addressing them!
Gratefully, Jenny
I have never charged anything. I contend if a person realizes a value in the gift I offer them, with the gifts the universe has offered me, then I allow them to choose that value their self.
How can any person place a value on these healing gifts the universe supports and allows each one of us to experience?
As far as money to live on! That is an earth bound issue, not a spiritual or holistic issue! I compare it to prostitution! I see all kinds of similarities. Including selling your bodies and talents for a fee. There maybe a lot of you who can justify your choice to charge money for your services and your desire to satisfy another’s need for you to help them release pent up energy. Whoops….their is the prostitution similarity again.
Ever experience another person’s dirty energy when you finished doing your thing with them?
Judgemental? Me? Nope!! Protitute yourself with clothes on or without clothes on, it does not matter to me. But then I am an alien to this human earth experience so it is very difficult to think like a human doing another for a price.
If you are really….really….really good, then why not charge $500, $1000 or even $2500 per experience. All I can say is if you are only charging $50 or $75 per experience, you must not be very good at what you do!
Life is all about different perspectives! Hold the one for your Self, that allows you to justify your choices. Prostitutes do!
Ok, I may be a little brash….but just because another says it is acceptable, does not mean every one does. So there you go, a person who sees choice justification in a different way. But then I was totally against Bush justification for invading Iraq before it ever happened.
That ever brings up a different issue maybe someone would like to address in written words.
“Holistic Justification”
“Spritual Justification”
Since when did “Justification” justify anything?
Thanks for taking time to read the thoughts I shared.
