Wall to Wall Mirrors Intimidating
Saturday August 2, 2003
In the News - A new study published in Health Psychology indicates that wall-to-wall
mirrors in gyms and dance studios intimidate women who are beginner exercisers,
causing them to become discouraged and unhappy with their appearances. Well....
duh, almost every woman already knows this. I'll admit that I personally find
the combination of huge mirrors and glaring fluorescent lighting at the local YMCA, where I
am a member, to be quite daunting. Having bad feelings brought on by mirrors can defeat the idea that exercising
is good for us and will make us feel better.
My every cellulite pucker, no matter how minuscule is illuminated and magnified. I had a trainer show me how to work properly with weights when I first became a member. It is important to know the proper way to use them. During my training period, I did my free-weight workouts in a room I affectionately refer to as The Testosterone Room. I called it this because of the male Y members who would proudly stand before the mirrors while flexing their muscles. Well, great for them, but those mirrors turned me into a shrinking violet. I would do my workouts as quickly as possible, the whole while trying to divert my eyes from the giganic wall-size mirrors. Now I choose to do private free-weight and dumbell workouts in the basement of my home, far away from the gym mirrors that I found to be so unsettling. And how about those dressing room mirrors.....??? Oh my gosh
