Pagan and Spiritual Rituals

Intentional Ceremonies

Ritual is a common practice among the spiritually connected. Pagan rituals have survived via religious beliefs, ethnic cultures, and family traditions of our roots. New generation rituals can also be invented through purposeful intention. If an action empowers you, ritualize it. Share your rituals.

Butterfly releases are symbolic rituals celebrating change. Similar to helium balloon releases which often represent letting go and dove releases celebrating love or new beginnings butterfly releases are common at graduations, birthday parties, weddings, and funerals. Butterfly releases can be done anytime you wish to mark a special transitional time in your life.

New moon ceremonies have to do with creation, manifestation, birth, and rebirth. The full moon completes the cycle, representing death, change, or tying up loose ends. The full moon symbolizes the end chapter, shedding light on the things that we no longer need to hold on to. Full Moon is an opportune time of the month for purging rituals to take place. The light the full moon offers illuminates those things that are interfering with our spiritual advancements.

Walking Labyrinths

The labyrinth is a meditative pathway which according to history has pagan roots, yet eventually found its way into church yards. Walking the labyrinth is a reflective journey of the spirit.

Smudging

Using a smudging tool is part of many Native American traditions. The burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is also common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual groups. The ritual of smudging can be defined as "spiritual house cleaning." In theory, the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy.

Celebrating Menarche

Menarche marks a young adolescent girl's advancement into womanhood. Menarche is a young woman's first menstrual period. In a healthy relationship, mothers and daughters both will anticipate a girl's menarche. Naturally the gathering for a young girl's rite of passage will be impromptu. Mothers, keep ready your list of nurturing women in your daughter's life (grandmothers, aunts, sisters, special friends) to invite.

Praying

It might be said that prayer is an earnest and deep attempt to communicate with our spiritual source. The intention of closed eyes during prayer is to quiet the mind whereas the intention of two hands placed together during prayer is to quiet the physical body's activities. When the mind and hands are silenced the spirit is allowed a more focused communication with a place of knowing.

Meditation

Meditation allows you to calm and balance your energies. Prayer rituals involve talking to God source, or whatever you call your power connection. Meditation is the flip-side of prayer, not talking, but finding a quiet space for listening.

Lighting a candle for a particular purpose or intention is practiced worldwide from people of all walks of life. Lighting a candle symbolizes bringing light to our wishes or desires. A candle can be lit as a prayer for peace or a request for healing.

Seasonal changes and the holidays spur traditional rituals such as coloring eggs for Easter and the Spring Equinox, trimming the tree for Winter Solstice and Christmas. Beltane sparks the making of may baskets and maypole dancing.

Tree Hugging

You've heard the phrase before, but have you ever taken a moment out of your day to do this? Although some trees, like people, are more huggable than others, they all need a hug now and again.
