Turkish nazar boncuğu - Protective Amulets

Evil Eye Cross Stitch Design

What is the Object?

The Turkish nazar boncuğu has special meaning for me. It is the "evil eye protector" that is ubiquitous in Turkey. I didn't even know what it was the first time I saw it in the home of the guy I was dating, but he explained that he'd gotten the one he had in his kitchen as a souvenir of his travels in Turkey.

How Does it Work?

After the guy I was dating became the guy I was about to marry, I was clearing out some dresser drawers in preparaion for moving in with him. I found a lovely black pashmina and it had an evil eye protector on it too. He'd bought it for his late mother and ended up giving it to me to wear. When we wed, I took the small evil eye protector from the scarf and wore it as my "something blue."

I have become so enamored of this protective device I even designed a free Evil Eye cross stitch pattern.

Lessons Learned

  • I learned that :
  • Even if a protective amulet is from a different region or culture than yours, you can adopt it.
  • Wearing amulets and protective symbols is comforting.
  • Even if you don't "believe" in something at first, it can come to have deep meaning to you.

Connie G. is one of my About.com associates/friends. She serves as the Guide to Cross-Stitch. It is so cool that she created this pattern for the evil eye charm. Also, check out her mandala patterns.
