Kay Steventon's Spiral Tarot was my first deck after the Rider-Waite. I got it secondhand on ebay, and from the moment I picked it up, connected with it. Some people don't like its expressive artwork, describing it as 'unfinished', but as an artist, this is exactly what appeals to me. There are references to 19th century art in the deck and the images have a direct, painterly feel that I love. The cards are slightly larger than regular playing cards, so not too large, and easy to handle. With rounded corners and a smooth finish, they shuffle easily.
I find the Spiral Tarot to be an emotional deck that relates well to the sort of personal and spiritual issues that we look for guidance on. It does have something of a 'mood' to it - it's perhaps not the most practical of decks, and if I want to read on more mundane, 'realistic' issues, I'd go for the RWS or similar.
There are astrological symbols on the Spiral Tarot, but I can't comment on the accuracy of the correspondences as I don't do astrology, but they are there for those who do. The theme is further developed in Steventon's Celestial Tarot.
My favorite card from this deck
Probably the Magician. He has youth and energy; there's a sense of potential, mercurial and shamanic.
