Healing Lesson of the Day

A signifier card is plucked from the tarot deck and set in place on the table prior to the reading. The purpose of having a signifier card is to set the intention or focus for the layout. Typically, a court card (king, queen, knight, or page) from the major arcanda is selected to represent the querent. Kings are usually chosen for men aged thirty-five or older. Queens are chosen for adult women. Knights are chosen for young men. Pages are chosen for young maidens (early twenties or younger) and also for youth of both sexes. Usually the reader will select the signifier card that will represent the querent, but sometimes the querent will be asked to select a favored card. A non-court card may be chosen as a signifier also. For example, if the querent is seeking guidance on undertaking a new venture an Ace (representing beginnings) may be more appropriate. Using a signifier card in a tarot reading is optional. A general reading without a specific question asked has no need for a signifier.
