Reiki is a healing practice where the healer channels their energy into the patient through touch. It is said to activate the healing properties within the patient to help with their physical and emotional well-being. This alternative medicine was created in 1922 by the Japanese Buddist Mikao Usui. Since it's creation several other variations have been created some with names like "palm healing" or "hands-on healing." For those who want to learn the traditional or Usui method, there are three levels of training. Here is what you can expect in a first degree traditional Usui Reiki class.

First Degree Class

  • Class Preparation - Get to class on time. It is recommended to avoid nicotine and caffeine the day prior to and the day of class. Wear comfortable clothing made of natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk, etc.) Do not wear nylon stockings or any other restrictive type of garments. Bring two cushy pillows. This is a full day class, don't forget to eat breakfast.
  • Introduction - Meet your instructor (Reiki Master) and fellow classmates while sipping on some relaxing herbal tea. This is the time for getting comfortable in your classroom, briefly chatting with your classmates.
  • Brief Discussion - Why are you taking this class? What are your expectations?
  • Class Overview - Class agenda is shared with students.
  • Definition of Reiki - Universal Life Energy - defining what is it.
  • Pre-Reiki hands-on experience - Notice your hands, is there any energy flow?
  • Receive attunements 1 & 2.
  • Share attunement experience with the class.
  • Post-attunement hands-on experience.
  • Learn self-treatment hand positions.
  • Give yourself a full self-treatment.
  • History of Reiki - Who are Mikao Usui, Dr. Hayashi, and Mrs. Hawayo Takata?
  • Lunch break.
  • Receive attunements 3 & 4.
  • Share time.
  • Learn hand positions to give a Reiki treatment to others.
  • Group Reiki - Everyone takes turns receiving a Reiki treatment.
  • Class Ends - At the end of the day you are Reiki Level 1. Your attunement to Reiki energy is permanent. Reiki is a balancing energy so drink lots of extra water for the next few days. You are to be congratulated for having given yourself such a wonderful gift.

About the Reiki Attunement Process

Reiki attunements open and expand the Ki-holding capacity or the Hara Line and clear energy blockages. They open a channel for the Reiki energy to flow from practitioner to client. The more a practitioner uses Reiki the clearer and stronger the flow becomes. The attunement process is what makes Reiki stand apart from other types of healing systems. Although other healing arts may use hand positions on the client, only Reiki has the wonderful benefit of the attunement process. For this reason, you cannot learn Reiki through reading about it, it has to be experienced. However, the markets are flooding with more and more informative books written about Reiki. Reiki can become a way of life if that is what you make of it.
