Spirit Animals and the Wheel of Life

Hal Zina Bennett offers his book Spirit Animals And The Wheel of Life in hopes of showing his readers a way to reclaim their own Ecospiritual connection with the planet both spiritually and practically.
The two main focuses of this text are:
  1. On the wheel or circle of life in the form of the sacred circle, labyrinth or a medicine wheel.
  2. Observance and study of animals as our spiritual teachers.
Seven animals are represented in Bennett's Ecospiritual Wheel which resembles the Native American Medicine Wheel from my understanding of it. These same seven animals are also outlined in a chart representing Hindu wisdom through the seven chakra system that coincide with the developmental cycles of life. Showing the animals in these two very different visual charts gives the reader an interesting perspective on seeing that although our human traditions may differ somewhat from culture to culture that our four-legged, winged, crawly and finned friends are not tied to any religious or cultural traditions.

Instruction helps are given on how to go about working the wheel and connecting with the various animal teachers through meditation and quiet contemplation. Six of the seven animals are the same for each of us: the eagle, the mole, the bear, the badger, the mountain lion, and the wolf. The power animal is unique to each individual. Bennett offers help in meeting and understanding your personal power animal.

Shamanism - as defined by Hal Zina Bennett:

Shamanism, as we understand it today, is simply another way of seeing, another way of looking at the world. As a process for observing and making sense of our lives, it is different from science, technology, philosophy, and even modern theology... If there is a definition that I feel comes even close to telling us anything useful, it would be that shamanism is a system of knowing that honors our own life experience, without mistaking it for the truth. And it is a way to embrace those invisible teachers who help us find grace in our dance between the seen and unseen worlds.
