How can I help my dog through the grief process?

Question: How can I help my dog through the grief process?
Dear Madeleine,

We recently lost our 12 year old dog Maggie. She was the alpha dog. We have 2 more dogs, one female, Sophie and one male Chuck. Sophie seems lost. I know dogs grieve but I am not sure how to comfort her. We are giving her lots of attention and love. Will she take over as alpha dog. Chuck seems to be oblivious to everything that goes on. He is a Beagle and I understand that is just part of the breed. Any assistance on how to help Sophie grieve will be appreciated.

Dianne

Answer: Hi Dianne,

So sorry to hear about Maggie. You could try giving Sophie Star of Bethlehem Bach Flower Remedy. 2 drops 4 times a day for a month on her food or treats. Also the homeopathic remedy Ignatia is very good for acute grief so perhaps you could enquire about it from a homeopath. This remedy might also help you cope with your grief, which I know can be so intense, from personal experience. Even though I know they are safe in spirit we still miss the physical contact.

I do hope this helps,
