Philip Smith's memoir of an offbeat upbringing in the 60s and his relationship with his famous decorator/healer father, Lew Smith.
Funny, Interesting, and Odd
What a joy it was for me to read Philip Smith's memoir of his offbeat childhood, documenting the interesting lives his parents led, particularly the life of of his father. Lew Smith is a very compelling character to read about, especially so for anyone who is interested in metaphysics, energy medicine, and holistic healing.
Reading about Lew Smith's wild adventures in his personal spirituality pursuits through his son's perception is intriguing. What child doesn't think his parents came from outer space? Yet Philip's tales of his parents eccentricities will make you almost believe it is true that his father did indeed come from a paranormal universe.
Philip's parenting was polarized between a mother who was enthralled with celebrity and various fads of the day and a father who once studied mind-control under the guidance of a metaphysician at an ashram.
Lew Smith became friends with renowned medium Arthur Ford after attending one of his seminars. He continued to communicate with him spiritually after Ford's death in 1971. Lew also relied on a pendulum to receive responses to almost any question. The question could be for diagnosing a client, or knowing what was the freshest and most nutritious fruit to buy at the market. It didn't matter what the question was, the pendulum always gave him the correct guidance.
A Father with Supernatural Gifts
Philip takes on the subject of being in awe of his father's healing abilities along with a teenage boy's longing to have a normal upbringing in a very gracious and loving way. Later on, as an adult he recognizes how remarkable his father was for his time, and this is why the book was written
. The telling of his memoir allows the reader to understand that Philip's "kooky" upbringing was not easy. It certainly had to be confusing. Yet, he tells of his experiences in both a humorous and respectful fashion. He gifts his readers with a front row seat into the life of a talented psychic.
