Question: Mother seeks a solution to language impairment for 14 yo son
My son is 14 and has an average nonverbal i.q., but slightly below average verbal i.q. which continues to improve after many alternative therapies. He has language and overall processing impairments that make academic learning and abstract (conceptual) thinking very difficult. He struggles so much to understand highler level concepts and becomes so frustrated. I feel like a solution for him and so many others like him are within reach--that we need only to know where to look. Thank you for any thoughts.
Answer: In looking at your son, I see a lessened effect of the neurotransmitter
norepinephrine which is a neurotransmitter in the catecholamine family. This
substance is released at synaptic nerve endings in the brain to transmit the
signal from a nerve cell to other cells in the body.
I would recommend using 600mg per day of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) in
divided doses with meals. DHA is the building block of human brain tissue
and the primary structural fatty acid in the grey matter of the brain it is
also what the brain uses to make norepinephrine. Also use 10mg per day of
Vinpocetine. Start with 5mg per day for the first week and then go to 10mg
per day after that.
Vinpocetine is a semisynthetic derivative of vincamine, which is extracted
from the periwinkle plant. It increases cerebral blood flow and improve
memory, focus and concentration.
