Question: When is it time to put Suzie down?
Full Question: Suzie, my dog, is 18; mostly deaf, mostly cataracted, had doggie Alzheimer's for which she takes medication. 30% of the time she acts like she's a two year old. The rest of the time she is "out of it". She still eats well, does most of her business outside, and does not seem in pain. The past few days though have been bad: walking into things, accidents, etc. When is it time to put her down?
Thank you, Bonnie
Thank you, Bonnie
Answer: Dear Bonnie,
My criteria for euthanizing is when the animal no longer is interested in eating or an any normal activities.
Of course, when their mind is going, they may appear normal but you may have to make the decision for her. 18 is a long life for a dog!
If she no longer recognizes you and no longer seems to have bladder control it may be time.
