Healing Lesson of the Day: Patch Test

<previous> 09/08 <next>

It is always a good idea to do a simple patch test before using new essential oils. Most essential oils are never to be applied directly on the skin without first being diluted. They are diluted by mixing with carrier oils.

To test, mix double the dose of essential oil you would use for treatment to one teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply a dab of the test mixture to your inner wrist or inner elbow. Cover with a Band-Aid or gauze bandage. Leave skin bandaged for 24 to 48 hours. If you experience any itchiness, redness, puffiness, blistering, or burning of the skin you are advised not to use the essential oil tested.

Note: Do not use essential oils without first checking for possible contraindications to any medications you are taking, health conditions, or if you are pregnant.
