I was a young black
man who was drafted into the Army
Memory: I was a young black man exploring psychedelics and the whole "hippie" movement. I was drafted, and was too scared to burn my draft card. I thought I'd have it better in Vietnam than in prison. I was wrong. I was sent in as a grunt after a very brief training. I was in the jungle with my squad, constantly scared and constantly trying not to show it. One night a large firefight broke out, it was so loud and confusing. There would be flashes of blinging light followed by utter darkness. It was very disorienting, and so loud with explosions, gunfire, screaming. I began to run in a panic and was shot down.
