Acupuncture Chat Log

Held on Thursday - May 20th

Guest Host - Isabeau Vollhardt, acupuncturist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine

This Chat was held on an evening that parachat was somewhat unstable due to "across the service" overload. I was "outed" before the chat session began - and my system would not allow me to log back in. Fortunately - I had turned the log-transcript ON before I got poofed. Also SapphireHOST was able to moderate the chat up until our wonderful Guest got poofed after about an hour. Regardless - there was some very good information shared.....please read on.

whorsew:

hi isabeau

Faerygirl:

hi isabeau

Isabeau:

Hi White Horse Woman.. I think I'll miss your chat this Saturday, but will you be doing another one?

SapphireHOST:

Well as HOST let me get started then

Isabeau:

Have any of you here in chat had acupuncture before?

SapphireHOST:

First of all I would like to thank Isabeau for coming in here tonight and chatting with us

Faerygirl:

no

Aquastar:

not me

iam:

yes

Psych:

i have had accupuncture

Isabeau:

you're welcome; I'll figure out the technology by the time we're done!

SapphireHOST:

not me

Psych:

3 times

Isabeau:

iam & psych: do you have any questions about acupuncture, based on your experience?

Psych:

no.

iam:

yes...when do the needles come out...lol...sorry...very sorry

iam:

no..just kidding

Isabeau:

For those of you who haven't had acupuncture, what would you want to know about it if you were going to have atreatment (iam--the needles never leave ;-) )

Aquastar:

lol

SapphireHOST:

does it hurt?

Psych:

lol iam. i could still feel some a few hours after.

Aquastar:

I want to know does big needle go deep?

Psych:

but they were removed.

Isabeau:

Usually, it shouldn't hurt; but it depends what practitioner you go to and how they were trained.

whorsew:

when i had it done (only 1 time) i felt this water running down my leg except it wasn't water.....what was that?

Aquastar:

lol

Isabeau:

The larger needles can be used to go deeper, however, the needles are only inserted until the acupuncturist feels the qi in the needle. It sounds like the water running was qi sensation.

Psych:

i could feel the energy moving down my legs.

iam:

me 2

whorsew:

mine felt like a river of water

Faerygirl:

gotta go didn't realize the time. Take care.{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}

Isabeau:

It's not uncommon to feel qi, or energy movement in various places, and in different directions during treatment. I find it's one of the more pleasant affects. bye faerygirl

whorsew:

by faery

Psych:

bye faerygirl

Aquastar:

whor - yellow?

iam

bye [[[[faerygirl]]]]

...........................flashdance joined............. :)

............................Faerygirl left ............. :(

iam:

hi flash

hi flash

hey flash - bonjour

Psych:

i did feel as if i didn't had any energy left for the rest of the day after treatment.

whorsew:

yes it was pleasant

Isabeau:

hi flashdance

Psych:

hi flashdance

whorsew:

it was the only time i was pain free for a week

Isabeau:

Sometimes that happens; it means you really needed the treatment....sometimes I would feel like I was walking on a cushion of air when I left my acupuncturist's office.

Aquastar:

can you accupuncture eyes????

iam:

my accupuncturist also uses magnets in conjunction with needles

Isabeau:

you can't acupuncture the eyes themselves, but there are points for vision.

flashdance:

hello room

Aquastar:

points in feet????

Isabeau:

my acupuncturist used to use magnets; however, recently the FDA has been more diligent in telling us we can't use them. There are points on the leg for vision, and many of the points in the feet are useful for a variety of things.

flashdance:

how would you treat migraines

...........................msbnice joined............. :)

Aquastar:

could I do without old age reading glasses???

Psych:

hi msbnice

iam:

hey [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[msbnice]]]]]]]]]]]

Isabeau:

migraines are usually best treated with points on the feet first, and an herbal formula to support the treatment

clu:

what training should one look for in a practitioner?

Aquastar:

hi, must be

msbnice:

hi again iam {{{{{{{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}}}}}}}}

whorsew:

so you work with herb also

SapphireHOST:

wb msb

flashdance:

what kind of herbal formula?

Isabeau:

It depends upon the patient. Look for someone who has had some experience in treating the problem in question. More importantly, look for someone who you feel you can establish rapport with.

Isabeau:

Flash--the herbal formula would vary depending upon the patient's constitution, but one of the herbs that's easy to find that may help migraines is peppermint.

whorsew:

what about back pain?

flashdance:

and lemon balm

Isabeau:

Back pain responds very well to acupuncture.

whorsew:

do you use any herbs with that

Isabeau:

Key herbs for back pain are eucommia bark and loranthus (mistletoe)

Aquastar:

mistle toe poison???

Isabeau:

the part of the mistletoe used isn't the berry, but the stem. and it's mulberry mistletoe, rather than the species that grows on oaks.

whorsew:

everything is poison used wrongly

Isabeau:

very true.

............................flashdance left ............. :(

Isabeau:

the Chinese used herbs in formulas in order to minimize any poisonous effects of the herbs; this is different than European tradition.

Isabeau:

you'll all have to translate chat-room-ese for me....

whorsew:

poof = left without notice

Aquastar:

can accupuncture cure fat???

whorsew:

. = listening

Isabeau:

that's what i thought. acupuncture can improve metabolism, so it's good for weight loss. but slowly.

whorsew:

brb=be right back

Aquastar:

how improve?

Isabeau:

it increases metabolism two ways: one is by improving digestion, so that food is better absorbed. the other is that it improves the appetite response, so that you're satisfied by your food. once satisfied, you stop eating, so overeating happens less.

msbnice:

be back i have to watch robbie do his death jump

Isabeau:

tell robbie acupuncture may not treat the side effects of a death jump...

...........................Tia joined............. :)

msbnice:

i would say not

whorsew:

hb=hurry back

SapphireHOST:

welcome to healing Tia

Aquastar:

can acu cure hypothyroidism???

Isabeau:

the other thing we help patients with for weight loss is choosing which foods to eat. it's very different than 'dieting' which we don't recommend.

Isabeau:

acupuncture can help balance the thyroid function, along with herbs. if a patient has been taking thyroid hormone for a long time, it will be more difficult.

Aquastar:

where do you put needles for thyroid???

Isabeau:

needles for thyroid will usually be on points near the ankle; if the thyroid is swollen, we may even use local points on the side of the neck (i've had them needled for the same thing myself)

Aquastar:

did it help???

Isabeau:

Yes, it did help.

Aquastar:

What foods???

iam:

can accupuncture effectively reduce tonsil/adenoid size in children?

Isabeau:

Foods for weight loss?

Aquastar:

oui

iam:

oui = yes

Isabeau:

tonsils: would probably treat with herbal formula; the herbs are shown in laboratory to kill many bacteria, including those that cause tonsillitis.

Isabeau:

Foods: first, we look for simple food combinations.

whorsew:

how many treatments would a person need for a back injury?

Isabeau:

Then for foods, we look for all five flavors present in the daily diet: bitter, sweet, sour, spicy, salty

iam:

which herbs for T/A inflammation

Isabeau:

For back treatment: depends upon how long they have had the pain. General rule of thumb: a month of treatments for every year of pain

Aquastar:

wow

Isabeau:

What symptoms occur with the T/A inflammation?

whorsew:

lots for me then

Isabeau:

The problem we have as acupuncturists is that we see people long after their original injury

Isabeau:

Also, for back pain, I would recommend learning t'ai chi ch'uan or yoga. preferably t'ai chi ch'uan for women.

whorsew:

the problem for me none close

Tia:

Can acupuncture help a 1 yr. old's ear infections?

iam:

sorry...tonsil adenoid ..you said you would use herbs...which ones?

Aquastar:

these herbs- do they work against Meth . Resistant Staph???

Isabeau:

if you can't find an acupuncturist close, can you find a massage therapist?

Isabeau:

The herbs may work against forms of strep and staph that are resistant to drugs; but they will take longer to work.

Aquastar:

which herbs??????????

Isabeau:

One of the herbs for T/A: dandelion (whole plant). The other: scutellaria (skullcap), the roots.

whorsew:

that is what i see massage therapist but don't work as good as acupuncture....still have pain

Isabeau:

If you could travel to an acupuncturist once a month, and have massage in between treatments, it may speed up your recovery

whorsew:

travel hard...makes worse

Isabeau:

That's a common problem.

whorsew:

massage therapist comes to my home

Isabeau:

However, acupuncture treatment, even if the drive makes the pain worse, along with an herbal formula, may still be beneficial.

iam:

ty...thank you Isabeau

Isabeau:

thanks iam

whorsew:

thank you isabeau

Isabeau:

thank you, good luck.

whorsew:

ty=thank you

Isabeau:

thanks for the translations!

whorsew:

yw

whorsew:

yw=your welcome

whorsew:

lol

Isabeau:

i figured... ;-)

whorsew:

lol=laughs out loud

Isabeau:

no, really ;-)

Isabeau:

laughter is good for the heart in Chinese medicine, by the way...in moderation, that is...

whorsew:

is good for the heart in all medicines

Isabeau:

universal truths are just that...

iam:

lol vs LOL

............................msbnice left ............. :(

Aquastar:

can we still ask questions???

Isabeau:

ask away

Tia:

Who knows anything about what might cure ear infections, is there such a thing????

Isabeau:

there is;

Aquastar:

k- what about h blood pressure???

Tia:

Please tell me.

Isabeau:

a specific formula goes to the ear in Chinese medicine, but it will take a while for me to type it out.

Isabeau:

blood pressure can be moderated with acupuncture and herbs.

Tia:

Ok, thankyou.

Isabeau:

One point in particular, on the wrist, is effective but has to be left in for 30 minutes....Also, the acupuncturist would take into account why someone has high blood pressure. Hormonally induced, or drug-induced (from medications) would be treated differently than stress-related.

Isabeau:

did that answer your question on HBP, or is there additional information you'd like

Isabeau:

How many of you in chat right now are energy workers?

Aquastar:

Yes thank you - what about arteriosclerotic heart disease

SapphireHOST:

I am

Isabeau:

depends upon how far the disease is progressed; one of the herbs useful for this is Radix notoginseng, "san qi" in chinese....It's not in the ginseng family, despite the name.

whorsew:

don't know if that is what i would call what i do but it sounds similar to what i do

Isabeau:

I just wanted to point out that energy workers respond extremely well to acupuncture.

Aquastar:

do you believe Ging. good for brain rot - or not????

whorsew:

that's why no pain after?

Isabeau:

Energy workers usually notice where the qi is flowing to in their body, and they support it better.

Isabeau:

Ginseng can help with poor memory, as can diet changes.

...........................Sandcastle joined............. :)

whorsew:

the river where there was no water

Psych:

hi sandy

Isabeau:

Exactly, the river with no water was the qi

whorsew:

okay

iam:

hello [[[[sandcastle]]]]]

Isabeau:

hi sandcastle

Sandcastle:

hello everyone:-) took 10 minutes to ge in here

whorsew:

are they more open to it is why

Aquastar:

slow to-night

iam:

theres a line up

Isabeau:

I think it's that they 're more used to the energy changing in their body. It doesn't seem strange to them that the energy in their body would change, so they notice it. People who don't work with energy sometimes don't realize what's going on for a few treatments.

whorsew:

i understand more in tune with what is happening with their body

Isabeau:

More in tune and more comfortable with it changing.

whorsew:

okay

Isabeau:

hold on, i gotta let in the cat... no kidding.

iam:

hb I

Isabeau:

he works with my patients sometimes.

Isabeau:

back to energy workers: they can also give feedback on the points and facilitate the treatment

whorsew:

dogs work well also

Isabeau:

dogs work very well...my neighbor's hangs out here sometimes to be a greeter

Aquastar:

cats just eat and sleep

Isabeau:

and they ask to have the door opened...

whorsew:

lol

Aquastar:

bang on the chain

whorsew:

dogs tell me where someone is hurting

Isabeau:

actually, my cat knows when a patient is feeling down; he gets on their lap and purrs very loudly

............................tar left ............. :(

SapphireHOST:

talk to me star...tell me what you are feeling...

............................Psych left ............. :(

Aquastar:

My cat jumps hard on my chest at night

Isabeau:

don't you hate it when they do that?

whorsew:

were starting to poof

SapphireHOST:

just having troubles with computer

Isabeau:

i noticed. was it something i DIDN"t say? seems to be a busy time to surf... i had problems getting back in...oh, the gremlins. I'm afraid they don't respond well to acupuncture.

Aquastar:

yes, then he tries to flatten my chest

Isabeau:

And if they did, they wouldn't tell...

iam:

lol @ I

Isabeau:

My cat just stares, and purrs loudly, when it's dawn. What is it cats have to do at 5:30 am anyway?

Isabeau:

acupuncture is good for excess fatigue, by the way...but not for typos

Isabeau:

whoresw, do you work with native american herbs?

...........................Psych joined............. :)

Isabeau:

any questions on acupuncture or Chinese herbs?

Psych:

system crashed and internet connection was gone after reboot.

Aquastar:

Can herbs stop bleeding??

whorsew:

i mostly use what i can grow

Isabeau:

yes, there are several herbs that stop bleeding.

Tia:

What is the best herb to take for energy??

Isabeau:

I'd say the best for energy is astragalus. Astragalus is in the same category as ginseng, and it's not too warm. Also, it moistens. Only american ginseng moistens, the others don't. So astragalus is a better choice for most people.

............................Isabeau left ............. :(

SapphireHOST:

oops sorry everyone

Email received from Isabeau the morning following her being rudely poofed from the chat system on Thursday evening:

please convey my apologies to Sapphire and the regulars at the health chat room. I was booted off by my own system, then couldn't get onto the mining.co website due to traffic, so unfortunately I was only there a bit under an hour.

thanks for scheduling me in the chat room, and perhaps we can do that (or something else related to the new about.com website and Oriental medicine) sometime soon.

best regards,
Isabeau Vollhardt, L.Ac.
