Here's How:
- Eat: It is important to have eaten a light nutritious meal before arriving at the donor center.
- Registration: Have a photo ID or blood donor card with you as you will be asked your name, address, and social security number.
- Medical History Interview: You will be asked a series of confidential questions concerning your medical history.
- Mini Exam: Your blood pressure, temperature, red cell level, and pulse rate will be checked.
- Donation: A needle is inserted in a vein at the inner bend of your elbow. The drawing of the blood takes only 5-10 minutes.
- Refreshments: Enjoy a small snack and drink of juice or soda to replenish the lost fluids in your body.
- Take it Easy: No heavy lifting or strenuous activity for the next 24 hours.
Tips:
- Some health conditions or medications may temporarily or permanently prevent persons from donating blood.
- Anyone who is in good health, is at least 17 years old and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate blood every 56 days.
