Born - May 12, 1820 in Florence (Firenze), Italy. - daughter of Frances Smith and William Edward Shore Nightingale
Died - August 13, 1910 - buried at St Margaret's, East Wellow, near her parent's home, Embley Park in Hampshire.


  • Home-schooled by Cambridge University educated father.
  • Nursing training at Kaiserswerth, near Dusseldorf.
  • Superintendent of the Establishment for Gentlewomen at No. 1 Harley Street, London in 1853.
  • Lady-in-Chief of 38 female nurses sent to military hospitals in Turkey.
