Salute to Our Trees

Pipestone, Minnesota

Pipestone, Minnesota is a very sacred place where Native Americans with tribal card identification can apply for permits to mine this precious red rock that is used to make pipes, effigies, etc. Pipestone is a cool place, oozing with wonderful vibes. I felt as if my husband Joe and I were both specifically drawn there for a visit.

Joe had first visited there about 12 years earlier and has often talked of his returning. Along the trails at one point there were about four stepping stones along a steep slope which had no hand railing. I had noticed that each person walking along the pathway in front of us would either lean their bodies against this one tree or brace their hand upon its trunk for balance. As I came upon it I too placed my hand on the tree trunk but lingered for a few moments. I wanted to take in the life energy of this strong tree. I looked upwards at its branches and felt greatly overwhelmed at the purpose this tree held in growing at this particular spot. Joe was walking directly behind me yet stood quietly as I pondered how this tree might feel about growing in this spot. I was searching my mind for some kind of ritual to use or words I could say to show this tree how much I appreciated it. I then said to Joe that I valued this tree immensely for its service to humans walking along this way. No words came to me, so after a few more moments I walked on. Behind me Joe also paused for a brief time. When I turned around and glanced back at the tree I watched Joe pat the tree trunk gently. He simply said, "Thank you Tree." I couldn't have said it better.
