Handling Your Mail

Declutter and Organization Tip

By Phylameana lila Desy, About.com

When your mail arrives, open and sort it immediately

Paper piles are a common encroachment in our living space. Not only do they take up space and clutter our desks and corners, stacks of paper needing sorted eats up our precious limited time. Every time you open a piece of mail, setting it aside to deal with later demands that you will have to pick it up again at some point. This is a big time-waster.

Keep a waste container and recycle box near the area where you open your mail. Toss out any junk mail immediately. Also toss out all those pesky inserts and opened envelopes that are taking up space. A paper shredder is handy to have nearby as well.

Sort through the mail-order catalogs. Get rid of the titles you are not interested in. Place the ones you want to read through at your leisure in their designated places. in a neat stack by your couch in the living room or in you bathroom. Doesn’t everyone keep a library in their bathroom?

Tuck any bills that arrive in a designated spot to deal with when you routinely write out the checks (weekly or biweekly, or monthly). For some folks, it is easiest to sit down and write out the check for payment right away.

Place important documents that arrive in the mail (such as insurance policies, medical reports, bank statements, certifications, etc.) in a safe place immediately. Optionally you can keep these paper items in a separate “keep pile” that is to filed weekly or monthly. But please stay on schedule with filing these documents or your “keep pile” will grow too high and eventually overwhelm you.

Items that have expiration dates such as coupons and sales flyers can be filed in a monthly divided portfolio according to their expiration date. This way, each month you can toss out the contents from the previous month without further sorting.
