Selecting the flowers to use to make your essences in itself is a process of inner growth and awareness. Flower essences are the blossoms of plants prepared from a sun infusion in a bowl of water, then further diluted, potentized, and then preserved with brandy.

Steps for Making Mother Tinctures of Your Flower Essences

  1. Sterilization of Equipment - Sterilize your equipment by washing them with hot soapy water. Be sure not to touch the inside surface of bowl and jars after washing to insure the purity of the essence to be processed.
  2. Tune Into Deva Energies - Intuitively connect with the Deva (entity or life spark) of the flower you have chosen to process in deciding how many actual flower heads are to be collected (generally one to five) of each variety.
  3. Collection of Blossoms - Collect the flower head by snipping them onto the glass saucer while being careful not to handle them. Touching them or sniffing them will alter the flower's energy.
  4. Careful Preparation of the Cut Flowers - Remove the petals using scissors or tweezers. Allow the petals to fall onto the glass saucer without handling them with your hands.
  5. Use Distilled Water - Fill two-quart bowl with one quart of distilled water.
  6. Place Petals into the Water - Lift the petals one by one and place them in the bowl of water so that each petal touches the water surface. The petals will float. Shake loose all the stamen particles beforehand.
  7. Solarize - Place the bowl in the garden or sunny place outdoors.
  8. Keep Varieties of Flowers Separate - Repeat steps 2-7 for each individual flower variety that you are making during the preparations. Don't mix the varieties together.
  9. Prayerful Request - Give prayerful request to the nature spirits for the healing properties of the flowers be treated by the sunlight. Allow 30-60 seconds per bowl full of petals. Deva energy is cosmically released into the water.
  10. Process Time - Allow the grounding process to take place. 3 hrs. - sunny day, 2 hrs. - partly sunny day
  11. Preservatives - Fill two quart canning jars with approximately 1 qt. of brandy. Recommended ratio is 40-50 percent brandy and 60-50 percent essence (no more than 50 percent brandy).
  12. Combining Solutions - Fill the remainder of the jars with the solarized flower solution.
  13. Labeling - Secure the jar with clean lid and bands and label with name of flower and date.
  14. Power Spot Processing - The finished jars can be then placed in the center of your garden or an alternate "power spot" for final processing.
  15. Congratulations- Your mother tinctures are complete! Your stock essences can be diluted into dosage portions at your convenience.

Equipment Needed and Helpful Tips

  • Tools and supplies needed: scissors, long tweezers, 2 quart glass bowl, glass saucer, distilled water, quart canning jars and lids, brandy
  • Best time for collecting flowers: 8 AM - 10:30 AM. A sunny day is a must in preparing flower essences!
  • Best day for collection: Choose flowers a day ahead of being fully open.
  • Important to note: Choosing which flower to be made into essences for your personal use can in itself be a process of inner growth and awareness.

Smaller Dosages

It isn't necessary to take flower essences directly from the source bottles which have a higher content of brandy in them than dosage bottles. Stock essences can be diluted into dosage portions which will reduce the brandy that is consumed to a minuscule amount.

For example, I rarely take a dosage directly from source bottles. I have taken a dose (rarely) directly from my Five Flower Rescue Remedy source bottle because I keep it in my travel pack and if I feel stressed in the moment may take a direct hit from that bottle rather than preparing a diluted portion. It is also best not to dose directly from your mother tinctures as precaution against possible contamination by accidentally touching the dropper to your tongue or saliva.

Alcohol Free Preservative Options for Your Dosage Bottles

Dosage bottles can be prepared with vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar as a non-alcholic preservative. Prepare (clean and sterilize) an empty one-ounce tincture bottle and fill 1/4 of the bottle with your choice of alternative preservative. Place 2-3 drops of each chosen stock remedies into the dosage bottle, then fill the remainder with purified water. A one ounce dosage bottle will last you approximately 10-12 days if you consistently take 10 drops 4X a day. Consumption of alcohol would be a trace amount from the 2-3 drops per essence taken from the source bottles.

For myself, because I have a full pharmacy of essences on hand I seldom bother to use any type of preservative in taking dosages. On the days that I want to use essences I place 1-2 drops of each essence (from the source bottles) which I have selected into a single 12 ounce bottle of purified water. I will drink from the "essenced water" throughout the day. Flower essences work just fine in this diluted form. Essences work best if they are taken frequently. So rather than gulping down a dropperful directly from the source bottle I suggest making dosage bottles.

Source bottles of flower essences are readily available in today's market. It is perfectly safe to use drops directly from source preparations you have either purchased or from your personal stash of stock jars. However, if you are taking more than one flower essence it is is more convenient to prepare single dosage bottles rather than taking a few drops each from three, four, or more source bottles. Especially if you are on the go, tossing one bottle into your carry bag simply makes more sense. Another bonus to preparing your own dosage bottles is that it makes using a combination of more flower essences more cost efficient.

What is the Difference Between Source Bottles and Dosage Bottles?

Source bottles (aka Mother Tinctures) are undiluted flower essences that have been bottled to last the year, or even longer. They include an added preservative to maintain their integrity and safety. Dosage bottles, on the other hand, are made from combining a few drops (typically 2-3) from the mother along with drinking water to be taken under the tongue or spritzed into the mouth four times a day over a 10 to 14 day period.

Step-by-Step Instruction for Making Dosage Bottle

  1. Gather Supplies - Tincture bottles, bottled spring water, preservative (optional), stock or source essences.
  2. Flower Essences - It is best not to blend together more than five different essences in one dosage bottle. If dosages are taken four times each day as recommended a dosage bottle will last you ten to fourteen days. Decide on an issue that you want to focus on for the next couple of weeks and select the essences accordingly. You may personally intuit flower essences to include in your dosage formula on your own through meditation or muscle testing . Or, you could consult with a flower essence practitioner for assistance in choosing the appropriate essences for your purpose.
  3. Water - Spring water is the best choice because is naturally infused with universal life energy. If you do not have access to bottled spring water, purified, or distilled water is preferable over tap water.
  4. Preservative - You will not need to use any preservative if you are only going to prepare a one ounce dosage bottle as long as it is consumed within a two week period. But, if you are preparing several dosage bottles to be used over several weeks or longer you will need a preservative. Brandy is a good choice. Do not grab a bottle of brandy from your liquor cabinet. Purchase a bottle, dedicate it to the purpose of healing, and use it only for flower essence preparations. Dosage bottles can also be prepared with vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar if you prefer non-alcoholic preservatives.
  5. Bottles - Glass tincture bottles typically come in one half, one, and two ounce sizes. Sterilize the bottles, caps and eye droppers with heated water or in the dishwasher.
  6. Fill the Bottle - Fill 1/4 of the bottle with your choice of preservative. Place 2-3 drops of each chosen stock remedy into the sterilized dosage bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with water allowing a little space for the eye dropper placement.
  7. Recommended Usage - Ten drops under the tongue four times a day. A one ounce dosage bottle will last approximately 10-14 days if taken consistently.
