Free Advice from Animal Reiki Shaman, Rose De Dan

Now that I am past the age of believing how others view me as my own perception of myself, I am ready to cultivate and resurrect my intuitive abilities. I have always been draw to animals and would like to allow myself to connect/communicate to them. I do know they have multitudes of lessons. Could you recommend any books, videos, teaching materials, with which I might get started in my quest?

Andrea

Dear Andrea, It's always tempting to reach for the "how-to" books when we want to learn a new skill. However, that may not be the best approach in developing intuitive skills for communication with animals.

Intuition is diametrically opposed to the concept of rationality or intellect. When communicating with animals you must learn to trust your heart not your head. It is not so much knowledge, as practice, that is important. Books and DVD's are simply a possible framework for learning to trust what you receive; experience is the foundation.

I have not actually studied, or read many books on intuitive work, rather I have learned from the animals by spending time with them, by asking them to teach me, for who knows them better than themselves?

How one receives intuitive information varies from person to person. Some get information through feeling it in their body, some hear it, others "know" it. You need to learn how you receive information, you can only do that by experimenting.

Listen with Your Heart, Observe with Your Eyes, Feel with Your Body

Here's an exercise you can do on a daily basis: choose an animal/bird that you see all the time either in your backyard or while you walk. While observing one individual open your heart chakra by tapping around the center of your chest in a counter-clockwise direction, and ask that individual to teach you--to share wisdom, insights and feelings. Listen with your heart, observe with your eyes, feel with your body. What do you feel he or she is saying? Keep a written journal of your experiences, incorporate sketches and doodles, and research that particular species. You might be surprised at the insights you receive, but more importantly you will be exercising your intuitive skills and learning to trust yourself.

Getting back to the subject of books, I think the best books are ones that inspire you to reach for your dreams, rather than ones that offer guide maps on how to get there. Road maps tend to make us hesitant to deviate from the defined path; they encourage us to stay mainstream, something that may discourage us from being uniquely ourselves. Always trying to do it like everyone else. I like to read books like Soul of a Lion, the story of one woman's struggle to rescue African wildlife--a common theme with a twist--she, and her family, shared their lives intimately with the animals, and listened and learned directly from them.

So, let the animals be your teachers. From your heart ask them to guide you on your path and walk with you. I wish you all the best on your journey!
