Maggot Therapy Success Story

Follow me on:

maggots Would you be willing to have 160 maggots set loose to feast on your foot? That is what Al Burns' doctor asked him this summer. Dr. Joel Gagnon, a vascular surgeon at the Vancouver General Hospital, suggested maggot therapy to treat gangrenous bed sores on his heels after two modern treatments (angioplasty and VAC) failed. Maggots feasted for three days on his dead and infected flesh. The treatment was a success and Burns was discharged from the hospital this month to continue his recovery at home.

Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDA) is the medical use of live maggots for cleaning non-healing wounds. How does it work? Supposedly the maggots get busy eating away at the wounds with positive results. The maggots' feasting action (1) clears away dead skin and infected areas, (2) kills existing bacteria, and (3) stimulates healing.

Don't go trying this at home on your own, you need a prescription from a doctor to obtain hygienic maggots to treat wounds.
