My childhood dog was afraid of thunderstorms. Cutie would run for cover under my parents' bed whenever a storm was brewing. I'm thinking now that she was trying to hunker down into the smallest space available to her in an attempt to feel safe. A recent report from the Associated Press says that storm-phobic dogs can benefit from wearing clothing that is being marketed as Thunderware, such as ear muffs, snug-fitting leotards, etc. Basically, your frightened dog can be comforted by being wrapped up. Just like newborns who can be calmed by swaddling, so can your dog. You can also create a cozy retreat where your dog can escape to whenever she is feeling anxious. Muting the sound of the storm by cranking up volume on your television or stereo is another recommendation for noise anxiety in dogs associated with thunderboomers.
