Mudras Photo Gallery

By , About.com Guide   July 30, 2006

Follow me on:

New Photo Gallery: - Mudras - There are currently 25 photos in the gallery but I hope to add more at a future time. There seems to be an exhaustive number of mudra hand gestures.

My weekend project was modeling for the photos featured in the Mudras Gallery. My husband teamed up with me for this photo shoot project as my photographer.

The best part of this modeling gig, aside from not having to pay the photographer, was that I didn't have to wear any makeup since my head wasn't in any of the photographs. Which was good because any makeup would have been dripping off of my face in this 90+ degree temperatures we are having in the midwest. Although I wouldn't have minded being in a swimsuit if a swimming pool or ocean had been nearby for me to take a cooling dip in.

The whole time I was posing with my hands and fingers in various mudra poses I kept thinking about the vintage television commercial for Palmolive dishsoap. You may remember the red-haired actress that played Madge the Manicurist who would dip her customers fingers inside a bowl of liquid Palmolive.

Anyway, I hope you find the mudra photos to be interesting and educational. I know I learned more about mudras today than I knew previously.

Now I can put "Hand Model" on my resume. ;-)

Thank you Anne, it was a lot of fun hand-modeling for the photographs. It felt like playing dress up using various scarfs for backgrounds, and wearing some of my favorite rings and bracelets, etc. I’ll pass on your compliment obout the photography to my husband. He considers himself to be an amateur photographer… but I also think his photos are professional looking.

Hey Dana,

I’m happy to have been of some help! I’ve learned over the years that timing is everything. I’ve been planning to do these photos since April, but other things kept taking priority. Guess, the universal timing was suppose to be now (at least for you). *smile* Stay tuned. I’m planning on adding a dozen or more mudras to the gallery in the next few days.

I have been, for a couple weeks, finding my hands in a mudra that I don’t know. I wonder if you can help me find out more about it. There is a similar mudra on the About:healing site that led me to you… The one that is close is Mida-no Jouin. The difference between that and what my hands are doing is that my fingers (last three) aren’t interlace/alternating. They are together with the right hand on top of the left palm up and index finger and thumb are making more of a circle with the index finger nail touching the thumb about halfway between the tip and first thumb knuckle. The index fingers are meeting flat at the middle/second segment between joints.

Anything you can tell me would be great. I know only a few mudras and am interested to know more about this to know where it is coming from.

In case it might be related, I have had dreams and occurences related to Durga as of late.

Blessings in your work,

Hello… I came across your site when looking for information on mudras. Yours was the most informative one I have found on the web. I rediscovered mudras thanks to a friend who forced me to hold my hands in the standard palms and fingers together mudra. I held them in that form for 20 minutes. Feeling the positive effect of doing so launched me on a search to find other mudras. Thanks to you I found a great site with many more!

I am a recovering bipolar with strong empathic tendencies. I have rebuilt my ego boundaries after not having them for years. Now having a set of tools which give me an almost instant healing capability of my emotional realm is about the best thing that has come along in quite a few years. The photos and explanation of the mudras have been a godsend. I just wanted to pass this along to you.

I will visit your site for more information as time passes. Who knows what else I may find here.
