Effects On Empaths From Katrina News Coverage

Wednesday September 7, 2005
Reader Response to article: Beyond Detachment, What Can The Empath Do?

I want to thank you SO MUCH for your article regarding hurricane Katrina and how this event can and does affect Empaths.

Not only does the American news media coverage of the devastation run rampant and unchecked, but all of the healing e-zines I am subscribed to are filled with "the victimization of the good people of New Orleans and surrounding area", and "who is to blame", and "why isn't there more help for the people affected", and so on and so on. Even subscribers from other countries feel the need to give their opinion as to how the American government SUX. I think that I shall now unsubscribe to these.

I, we, know that this horrible thing has happened.

Thank you for being positive about it all. Thank you for offering practical suggestions. It will be positive and practical prayers, positive thoughts and actions, all embracing compassion, that will help the area recover. And I know it will recover.

Yours,
Jana

I just wanted to send a quick comment about the article "Beyond Detachment." Thank you for being open and sharing!

My heart goes out to those who lost family, friends and shelter, and I have kept up with the news enough to know that the tragedies of what occured went far beyond the natural kind. It is horrible. As we're approaching another September 11th, I imagine there will be many who will feel "double-whammied" by the media soon.

I am a sensitive (an HSP as some like to call it), and I can tell you I haven't felt this physically bad in quite some time. I realized quickly that for sensitives/empaths, self care has to be first priority, especially now. It's not being selfish - if we don't care for ourselves, how can we help others? We just need to find balance, in whatever way works best for us.

That's my two cents...

Love, peace & blessings,
Annalisa

I'm very glad I cut my tv service off a couple of weeks ago. It's overwhelming to me just online, in print, and energetically. I remember how I was after 9/11 -- I stayed glued to the tv for a week and it really swamped me. I was feeling a tremendous amount of anger last week -- part of it mine, with some stuff I've been clearing, and part of it related to Katrina and the bungled relief efforts, with people suffering needlessly, and I think part of it wasn't mine at all, but emotions I was picking up.

I think this is a call to action -- to do whatever we can to help others, and to balance ourselves while not hitting compassion fatigue. And clearly it is a wakeup call for those who want to continue ignoring the earth we live on.... join discussion
