Lifelong Christian Questions Reiki

Monday August 29, 2005
Holistic Healing Forum Discussion - Forum member Lilee asks "...how do I reconcile my Christianity with wanting to participate in Reiki? Is there a way? If you're praying to Reiki to help channel the energy in the proper place, isn't that kind of bad, from the Christian perspective? Like I said, I don't want to do something that is going to make me a blasphemous Christian in the eyes of....well, God..." join this discussion

(1) Rosita Tanza says:

Reiki healers DO NOT pray to reiki to receive, channel or acquire the energy for healing (unless they are non-Christian or New Age practitioners). Reiki come from the Holy Spirit. Just because the word “reiki” does not appear in the Bible it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come from God. Reiki is a Japanese word. Anyway, everyone tries to interpret the Bible concerning reiki and other issues, but no one seems to bother to ask God DIRECTLY about this. We Christians are so used to making assumptions about what God can and can’t do (without even asking HIM) that many non-Christians are taking advantage of what God has given freely to all humanity and using it. Healing is for all, not just for Christians. Just because we as Christians are not instantly healed “supernaturally” or by a medical doctor it doesn’t mean that God doesn’t want Christians or anyone else to be healed by reiki. We go to non-Christian physicians for healing with medications, etc. don’t we? If we really trust God, ASK HIM ABOUT REIKI!!! And please, make sure you’re listening from God and not your own mind or the denominational traditions we have been thought thoughout the years.

Here’s another view point. Reiki is a New Age practice, no matter how people try to squeeze it into a Biblical, God-centered thing.

(4) Hayden says:

I think that Reiki does not have to be associated with the occult if the user has their focus on Jesus. God’s Ruach (Spirit) is everywhere – and through Him all things are made and held together. I believe God can definitely be there where an open vessel, prayer, and laying on hands meet. Is it Life Energy or is it Holy Spirit or…. but wait…if we stop playing with words and lose our postural grip of wanting to appeal to the Chritians by speaking Christianese we can relent our sectarianism and conclude that the Holy Spirit is Life-Energy. Not all paths lead to salvation, don’t be mistaken by thinking that’s what I’m saying. There is only one Way, one Truth, and one Life – Christ Jesus. I think of it in the following context which I imagine if I do practice ‘reiki’ with massage therapy it will work out like this. People come to me for a Life Energy Healing (secrelty to Ninja them with the Holy Spirit) sessions who are more familiar with it being a New Age thing allows for opportunity that I may minister to the Lord of Hosts lost sheep I will happily call it whatever you want.
God doesn’t live in the box of orthodoxy, catholicism, or protestants craft for Him. He is the creator. And how many of you Christians honor your Jewish roots instead of demonizing them according to the traditions of men?

(5) David says:

“Here’s another view point. Reiki is a New Age practice, no matter how people try to squeeze it into a Biblical, God-centered thing.” Please read below about Reiki. Reiki is not New Age it is Ancient. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words -Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

There is absolutely no way to reconcile reiki with Christianity. The Holy Spirit is not a puppet to be channeled for our amusement. Anyone who tells you otherwise is doing the devil’s business.

I am a Christian and I practice Reiki. I also go to a Reiki healer when needed. My opinion is simple. How can you practice Reiki without a strong spiritual belief system? I could not practice Reiki without my Christian faith.

(9) Andre says:

I am shocked to read some of the comments. It is obvious the people that believe that you can call yourself a Christian and practice Reiki has no idea who God is. God the Father, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, is the Holy Trinity. When did the Holy Spirit becaome seperate from the Trinity to become a slave to any one who learns to do Reiki in a “48 Hour Crash Coarse” as advertised. We live by mercy and grace from God. Yes, the Holy Spirit can heal, but through faith of the person needing healing. God will decide who heals and who doesn’t, not your “Reiki Master”.
Again the Devil ( who by the way was defeated on the cross ) are deceiving you. If you need healing work on your sin, prayer and faith. I will pray for you that God will give you the revelation so that you can see the error of your ways.

(10) Tony Churchill, Reiki Master Teacher says:

Reiki is not religious, it’s spiritual. Would you suggest that no one can live spiritually without being Christian? Wouldest thou, bretheren, become stumbling blocks?

(11) Jane2222 says:

Those who are claiming that Reiki cannot be reconciled with Christian faith are ignorant either of Christianity or of Reiki. They are perfectly reconciled, as Reiki is merely a manipulation of chi–like acupuncture. Chi is not spirit; it is physical energy, like sound waves or electrical waves. Working with Chi is deeply calming, and after a Reiki treatment people have a sense of relaxed well-being. But again, this is not spiritual, it is the same reponse the body has to a long massage or a yin yoga class.

Many people use a collection of healthy physical practices to support a balanced life, and to do so honors the temple of God that is your body. In that way, everything we do to take care of our health is righteous.

I am a devoted Christian who practices both Reiki and Yoga. I devote these practices to the Kingdom of God and put them, along with every other aspect of my life, under the guidance and rule of my Lord Jesus Christ. If you are interested in Reiki, I suggest you do the same.

As you grapple with these issues, remember that logical thought and simple wisdom are not forbidden by Christianity.

(As for the gentleman who claimed people cannot choose to heal, why then do people go to Medical School? Is that also an abomination?)

(12) Karena says:

I am confused about this, because some people say that christians shouldn’t be doing this but others on here say it is ok, and Tony they aren’t saying that you can’t live without being a christian, they are saying that being a christian you shouldn’t do reiki

(13) David says:

It does sound confusing, doesn’t it!

Sadly, this is because followers of Jesus like myself (and back through the centuries), didn’t trust what we read about Jesus and his power and compassion to heal. So unfortunately, we made excuses for our lack of faith and healing was largely absent from the church.

Meanwhile, others became adept at harnessing healing from other sources – other spirits.

God, the creator, heals through His Spirit (referred to above as the Holy Spirit). This miraculous healing power is available to be used to serve others by those who love God, and therefore love and follow the example of his son, Jesus Christ. Jesus said that his followers would be able to heal, because he gives them that authority (ie ‘in my name’).

So, ask yourself, do you want to go to someone for healing where the ‘energy’, or the ‘power’ comes from an unknown spirit, or do you want to receive healing from the ultimate spiritual source, God, the creator?

Many followers of Jesus will now offer healing prayer – sometimes in a church, sometimes in another setting – it will nearly always be completely free of charge.

(14) Sylvie says:

It would be one thing if the Reiki practitioner was giving glory to God for the healing that takes place…but unless s/he is a Christian Reiki Practitioner (and even then I’m not sure), that is not the case. The “glory” goes to the self, to the power of words, to the skill of the practitioner who is able to “align the chakras” through energy manipulation.

The jury is still out for me. I’m starting to lean toward Reiki being irreconcilable with following Jesus…but I’m not sure.

I experienced my first Reiki session this week and the results were phenomenal…physically. Spiritually, however, I feel completely separated from my God. I’ve been miserable emotionally and almost obsessed with going back to get more Reiki done! To me, those side-effects are a huge red flag that I should stay away from Reiki.

Even though I tried to force Reiki to align with my faith by praying to Jesus through the experience and thanking God for the opportunity for healing, I continue to feel like I’m being warned…that it’s dabbling in something that I don’t want to allow into my life.

By the way, classic medicine does not purport to include contacting any type of “spirit” or “energy force”. In essence, the debate here is about our spiritual health so the two really cannot be compared.

(15) Lezlie Cebulski, ND, EFT-ADV says:

I am a Christian, naturopath, and EFT practitioner. If you read the book of Acts, you will see that the apostles, through the power of the Holy Spirit, healed and comforted many people. The Holy Spirit does not require people to lay hands on others to heal, but there have been many great Christian faith healers who have healed and comforted others by praying for the Spirit and laying on hands. I have personally done it and could physically feel my fingers and hands tingling.

Unless the healer is Christian & asking God for the Holy Spirit, I would not want a Reiki healer working on me. I don’t know where he/she is getting spiritual power. There is a spiritual world, unseen. It is important to understand the source of the practiioner’s power. If he/she doesn’t know where/who/what the source is, it isn’t a good idea.

With that being stated, I think most Christians are missing the best of what holistic care has to offer. We are electromagnetic/electrical physical beings. Not enough understanding is out there regarding how much our emotional and spiritual life impacts our health–and our health impacts our spiritual and emotional life.

We are 100% spirit, 100% mind, 100% body at the same time, like the Trinity. This is the essential concept in holistic care. Unfortunately, there a many whackos who branch out to “animal spirit guides” and other silly concepts which understandably frighten Christians.

There is nothing inherently evil about understanding meridians, chakras. They are only words to describe the energy centers and how energy flows through our bodies. Blockages of physical, emotional, spiritual energies do occur & they create disease. A Christian holistic practitioner can help educate the client by the use of Christian Emotional Freedom Technique, herbs and supplements for the body, & prayer which focuses on worship of God and burdens for other people.

(16) read for yourself says:

I am a Christian and I use various herbs, message techniques, stretches, etc to address various needs. These traditions were passed to me by my grandparents and personal study. Though every individual has a spiritual, mental and physical component this is NOT like the holy trinity. Reiki’s Japanese terms are in direct conflict with Christianity. The Japanese aren’t even Christians and do not believe in an after life. Exercises and stretches are not evil but the spiritual components, energy, chanting -not Christian. The old folks new how to balance life but this info has been lost in our disconnected society. So now we fall for any new version of the same old stuff,

(17) Chaplain JT Moore says:

Blessings to each of you who have entered your opinion from your heart. Those who have entered one from your head, I exhort you to try Reiki for yourself and not to depend on another’s gospel, so to speak.
I use Reiki, EFT and Hypnosis with wonderful results and they often open doors for me to tell about Jesus and our relationship. I appreciate the warnings from those that have posted but do strongly disagree with you perspective. I’m so glad salvation is a personal experience and not one solely dependent upon another persons experience, insights or judgements.
Blessings Y’all,

WOW!!!!! Reading all of these posts has my jaw dropped. It appears that we have many “Judges” in here with their own opinions! Nobody can put God in a box and the only way to heaven is thru Jesus Christ, bottom line! I believe that intently. After working with Reiki over the last 2 years, my life has changed profoundly. I understand the energetic field and how we can easily throw it off and be “stuck”. Yes, God heals all things and God has created the universe which is the “Life Energy” we practitioners tune into. Anybody can do it. God is soooo much more than what any writings can describe. Having the awareness to manually channel that universal energy has nothing to do with my faith. Reiki is not a religion and we all know that religions are nothing but LAWS. I have an awesome relationship with my Lord and I know where I am going when this body gives in. We are ALL part of the universe which as “Humans” we will never understand. Reiki doesn’t heal. God heals. Reiki is just a tool to work on the energetic field. I pull God’s available, FREE universal energy into my field to stay balanced and will continue to do so.

Peace!

(20) Brooke says:

I am a christian and i strogly believe Reiki is a cult. Christian brother and sister should not be decieved. And i am going to explain why i have this claim.
I was introduced to Reiki two days ago from a Reiki class.I register to the class because i needed one credit class to acheive full time status, i did not have any idea what this class was all about. The first day of class, the teacher explained to us the histoy of Reiki and she announced that we all should recieve this power before we proceed. I was shocked because this was more than learning about Reiki, we were told to recieve this power. The teacher did not let us choose. I asked her if she knows where this power or energy comes from that transfer from her to students at the time of the attunment. She said she does not know where the power comes from, but she said the outcome has been good, she said people have been healed.
I refused to go through the attunment but all the other students accepted it.
Why this power is not from God
-The practice came from Japan and have buddism at its orgin.
-people might be healed using this techinqe, but it does not mean all healing is from God. The bible says that ” At the time of the end days the devil comes looking like an angel.” The devil is not going to come killing, he comes healing, so people will be decieved.
-The main danger of Reiki is that it causes people to come to Reiki for their healing rather than going to God. The main goal is to get people away from God. On the bible God stated that he is a gealous God, and he does not want his people to worship no one,but him.
As a christian we don’t need Reiki for out healing God is sufficent. Jesus christ took our sickness on the cross. It is finished. We were healed when Jesus died and defeted the devil. Jesus does not need the assistance of Reiki. He is all sufficent God. If you need healing call up on the name of the lord and you shall be healed. The devil was thrown out of haven because he wanted to be in God place, and he wanted to be worshiped. And he is doing the same thing through Reiki,he want you to come to Reiki seeking healing rather than going to the all mighty God. This way he can satisfy his craving to be worshiped. But christian you should refused to worship Reiki. Ask God for what you need through Jesus chrsit. The bible say what ever you ask in the name of Jesus shall be given un to you.
I will continue to post my point of view in the future. please christians if you are not sure about this do not get in the practice to find out. Investigate and ask your spirtual leaders. And God said i am all mighty his power is sufficent for us,we do not need any other.

(21) Phylameana says:

Brooke’s fear of the Reiki attunement process is obvious. Actually I’m not surprised. I would have been nervous if the attunement had been explained to me as receiving a power from an unknown source. Wow! I think I would have walked out of that class myself. A Reiki attunement is primarily ritual. We all have Reiki in us already, the attunement is a way of recognizing and awakening this universal life energy that is already in us. The attunement helps to open up the channel, breaking through any energy blocks, so that it can flow more freely. That being said. I’ve always taught that Reiki is for everyone, but that everyone is not for Reiki.

Reiki practitioners are invited to share Reiki Attunement Testimonies.
